Ancestors of Charles Hogg RAINE (1878 - 1959) 1
This is the family tree of my great grandfather Charles Hogg RAINE.
[1] Edward RAINE was born c.1610 in Mickleton, Romaldkirk, Yks, possibly the son of Giles RAINE or of John RAINE. He may have still been alive in 1673 at Mickleton, Romaldkirk, Yks as there was an Edward RAINE registered for Hearth Tax. I have not definitely identified his marriage yet, but I believe that the following were his children:

[1b] Robert RAINE born some time after 1630, probably 1636.
[1b] Robert RAINE was born in c1636. Robert was employed as Fellmonger in 1660 in Mickleton, Romaldkirk, Yks. Robert married Alice HARKER in May 1660 at Romaldkirk and had the following children:
[2a] Grace RAINE was born in 1661 in Romaldkirk, Yks. She was christened on 16 Feb 1661 in Romaldkirk, Yks. She was buried on 18 Feb 1661 in Romaldkirk, Yks.
[2b] Frances RAINE was born on 5 May 1661 in Baldersdale, Romaldkirk, Yks. She was christened on 5 May 1661 in Baldersdale, Romaldkirk, Yks.
[2c] Robert RAINE was born in 1662 and baptised on 10 March 1662 in Mickleton. On the 20th November 1680 at Romaldkirk, Yks he married Margaret DENT. They had four sons - Robert, Joseph, Joshua and Tobias.
[2d] Mary RAINE was born in 1664 in Mickleton, Romaldkirk, Yks. She was christened in Feb 1664 in Mickleton, Romaldkirk, Yks. Mary married Thomas GIBSON on 23 May 1688 in Romaldkirk, Yks.
[2e] Thomas RAINE was born in 1665 in Mickleton, Romaldkirk, Yks. He was christened on 29 Oct 1665 in Mickleton, Romaldkirk, Yks.
[2f] William RAINE was born in 1667 and baptised on 17 November 1667 at Mickleton. He married Margaret JONSON on 9 May 1686 at Romaldkirk. They had three children - Margaret, Henry and Henry.
[2g] Margaret RAINE was born in 1670 in Mickleton, Romaldkirk, Yks. She was christened on 15 May 1670 in Mickleton, Romaldkirk, Yks. She died in infancy.
[2h] Ann RAINE was born on 17 Nov 1672 in Romaldkirk, Yks. Ann may have married John STEPHENSON on 21 Apr 1692 in Romaldkirk, Yks.
[2i] Margaret RAINE was born in 1675 in Mickleton, Romaldkirk, Yks. She was christened on 30 May 1675 in Mickleton, Romaldkirk, Yks.
[2j] Edward RAINE was born in 1677 and baptised on 8 Apr 1677 in Mickleton.
[2j] Edward RAINE born 1677, baptised on 8 Apr 1677 in Mickleton, Romaldkirk, Yks. Edward married Eleanor WINTER on 21 Nov 1705 in Morland, Westmorland. Eleanor WINTER was the daughter of William WINTER and was born on 7 Oct 1683 in Morland, Westmorland. She had two siblings, Isable and William. Edward and Eleanor had the following children:
[3a] William RAINE was born in 1706, baptised 10 Aug 1706 in Romaldkirk, Yks. He married Mary RUTTER and had two children, Elizabeth and Ann.
[3b] Hannah RAINE was born 1 on 26 Dec 1708 in Mickleton, Romaldkirk, Yks. She was christened on 26 Dec 1708 in Mickleton, Romaldkirk, Yks. She may have married Christopher GIBSON on 26 Dec 1731 at Middleton in Teesdale, Durham. They had a daughter, Mary.
[3c] Edward RAINE was born in 1711, baptised on 21 October 1711 in Romaldkirk, Yks and buried on 29 Dec 1717 in Romaldkirk.
[3d] Robert RAINE was christened on 14 May 1714 in Romaldkirk, Yks.
[3e] John RAINE was christened on 18 Oct 1716. He died in Sep 1788.
[3f] Isabell RAINE was born in 1719 in Romaldkirk, Yks. She was christened on 26 Apr 1719 in Romaldkirk, Yks. Isabell married Robert HIND on 3 Sep 1743 in Romaldkirk, Yks.
[3g] Mary Ann RAINE was born on 31 Oct 1721 in Mickleton, Romaldkirk, Yks. She was christened on 31 Oct 1721 in Mickleton, Romaldkirk, Yks.
[3h] Thomas RAINE was born on 18 Dec 1725 in Romaldkirk, Yks. He married Jane ADDISON on 4th Nov 1753 at Romaldkirk, Yks. They had nine children: Phyllis, William, Thomas, John, Joseph, Mary, Robert, Mary and Jane.
[3e] John RAINE was christened on 18 Oct 1716 in Romaldkirk, Yks. He died in Sep 1788 in Barnard Castle, Durham. He was buried on 21 Sep 1788 in Barnard Castle, Durham. John was employed as Joiner 1747 - 1788 in Barnard Castle, Durham.
John married Ann GELBY on 16 Sep 1736 in Bowes, Yks. Ann was born in Appleby, Westmorland on 24 Sep 1716, daughter of William GELBY. She was buried on 30 Jul 1756 in Barnard Castle, Durham. She probably died in childbirth as her youngest son John was baptised on the same day.
Note: Although there are two marriages for 1736 in the parish transcripts for Bowes

Due to other evidence found in the Barnard Castle register I think the Gelby marriage is the correct one.
John and Ann had the following children:
[4a] Mary RAINE bap 13 Sep 1741 d 10 Oct 1741 bur 11 Oct 1741, all in Barnard Castle, Durham.
[4b] Ann RAINE bap 14 Nov 1742 in Barnard Castle and buried 10 Jun 1746 in Barnard Castle, Durham.
[4c] Mary RAINE bap 07 Jan 1745 in Barnard Castle, Durham. Married Cuthbert BLACKETT on 26 Dec 1771 in Bowes, Yks. They had four children: Cuthbert, Mary, Sarah and Joseph.
[4d] Edward RAINE was born in 1747 in Barnard Castle, Durham. He was christened on 10 May 1747 in Barnard Castle, Durham. Edward married Margaret GIBSON on 27 Sep 1788 in Barnard Castle and had four children: Margaret, Jane, Isabella and Mary Ann. Edward was a merchant and grocer in Barnard Castle and acted as one of the churchwardens and overseers between 1799 and 1801. He owned property in Thorngate, Barnard Castle. After Margaret's death in 1802, Edward married Mary RHODES in Barnard Castle on 29 Aug 1804.
[4e]Eleanor RAINE was born in 1749 in Barnard Castle, Durham. She was christened on 19 Nov 1749 in Barnard Castle, Durham. She died 02 May 1764 in Barnard Castle.
[4f] Ann RAINE bap 22 Oct 1752 in Barnard Castle, Durham. She died 31 Aug 1768 in Barnard Castle.
[4g] John RAINE born 1756, baptised 30 Jul 1756 in Barnard Castle, Durham - note, this was the same day as his mother's burial. He died 07 Nov 1763 in Barnard Castle.
John then had a long liaison with Hannah WATERMAN daughter of Thomas WATERMAN. Hannah was born on 08 Dec 1723 in Barnard Castle, Durham. She was christened 08 Dec 1723 in Barnard Castle, Durham. She was buried in Barnard Castle on 12 Dec 1791. They never married.
They had the following children:

He was buried on 4 Jun 1844 in Barnard Castle, Durham. Joseph may have married Jane HOGG on 15 May 1783 in Romaldkirk, Yks. Prior to that he may have married someone called Ann. They had one son, Joseph.
[4j] Thomas RAINE was born in 1761, baptised 31 Mar 1761 in Barnard Castle, Durham.
[4k] Richard RAINE was born in 1763 in Barnard Castle, Durham. He was christened on 1 Jan 1763 in Barnard Castle, Durham. He died on 27 May 1763 in Barnard Castle, Durham.
[4l] Hannah RAINE was born in 1764 and baptised on 2 Mar 1764 in Barnard Castle, Durham. She died in 1791 and was buried in Barnard Castle on 15 Oct 1791. She had an illegitimate daughter, Eleanor in 1786.
[4m] John RAINE was born in 1764 and baptised on 2 Mar 1764 in Barnard Castle, Durham. He married Catherine PARNABY on 28 Jan 1788 in Barnard Castle, Durham. They had three children: Mary, Jonathan and William. He worked as a clogger in Barnard Castle, Durham.
[4n] Richard RAINE was born in 1766 in Barnard Castle, Durham. He was christened on 7 Mar 1766 in Barnard Castle, Durham. He married Hannah CHAPMAN on 1st Jan 1787 in Startforth, Yks. They had two sons: John and Thomas. Richard appears in the 1841 Census for Barnard Castle in the household of his nephew, Edward Raine.

Thomas married Elizabeth BULMER daughter of Thomas BULMER and Elizabeth PEARSON on 28 Dec 1783 in Barnard Castle, Durham. Elizabeth was born in 1758 in Barnard Castle, Durham. She was christened on 20 Sep 1758 in Barnard Castle, Durham. She died on 30 Jun 1830 in Barnard Castle, Durham.
They had the following children:
[5a] Phillis RAINE was born in 1784 in Barnard Castle, Durham. She was christened on 27 Jun 1784 in Barnard Castle, Durham.
[5b] Edward RAINE was born in 1786. He was christened on 16 Apr 1786 at Barnard Castle, Durham. Edward married Mary HUTCHINSON (dau of John HUTCHINSON and Hannah RUSSELL) on 24 Jun 1807 in Startforth, Yks. They had a son, John born in 1808 and two daughters (so far not traced). Edward had a business as a carpet manufacturer in Barnard Castle. Edward died in the March Q of 1867.
The family are listed on the 1841 and 1851 Censuses for Barnard Castle.

[5f] Eleanor RAINE was born in 1794 in Barnard Castle, Durham. She was christened on 23 Apr 1794 in Barnard Castle, Durham. She died 1 on 26 Jul 1879 in Hackney, London. Eleanor married Charles FELGATE on 25 Dec 1818 in London. They had six children: Thomas, Eleanor, Elizabeth, Charles, Hannah and Susannah.
[5g]William RAINE was born in 1796. He died on 25 Feb 1861 in Barnard Castle, Durham.
[5h] John RAINE was born on 21 Jan 1798 in Barnard Castle, Durham. He was a Dissenting Minister, serving between 1820 and 1826 in Bolsover, Derbyshire before moving briefly to Middlewich, Cheshire and then from 1828 to 1832 serving in Lofthouse and Staithes in Yorkshire before moving to Horsley, Northumberland where he served from 1832 to 1856, dying there on 23 Mar 1860. He married Margaret NETTLESHIP on 21 Jan 1830 in Whitby, Yks. They are in Horsley in the 1851 Census.

Joseph married Rose McQUINN in 1875 and they had two children: Martha and Catherine. Rose McQUINN was born in Aire, Scotland in about 1850. After Joseph's death, Rose married William WADE in 1883.

She was thrown over the bridge at Startforth into the Tees when it was at full spate and her body was not discovered until the 20th August down river at Hurworth near Darlington. Both Sarah and Matthew must have died within the next two years.
On 31 Dec 1863 he married Isabella McGEE at Dundee, Scotland. They had six children: Eliza, Annie, John, William, Joseph and George.
I have not been able to locate the family on the 1871 Census: it may be they are still in Scotland at this time. However, in 1881 and 1891 they are back in Heckmondwike.

This family disappear before the 1871 census. Family rumour was that they went to South Africa. However, I have traced a death for Jacob in Ontario, Canada - 31 Oct 1916. As yet I have no information on when he emigrated and what happened to Sarah and the two children.
