The LANGLEY Family

Elizabeth LANGLEY was the daughter of Moses LANGLEY and Sarah Jane GOMMERSALL. She was born in 1884. According to the 1881 Census, Moses was born c1840 (he was recorded as being 40 years of age) but on his marriage certificate in 1869 he is recorded as being 24 years old, putting his birth as late as 1846. Moses was the son of George LANGLEY, pitman. Moses was married on March 13 1869 to Sarah Jane GOMMERSAL, daughter of John GOMMERSAL, pitman. Sarah Jane was 18 at the time of her marriage.

There is a baptismal entry for William GRIFFITH born Lanchester ch 12 Sep 1847 son of Thomas Griffith and Ann

I have obtained the birth certificate for Mary LANGLEY which shows she was born on 10 Jul 1842 at Framwellgate Moor, Durham, the daughter of George LANGLEY, Pitman and Ann LANGLEY formerly SIMPSON.

Before she married George LANGLEY, Ann SIMPSON was evidently married/had a liaison with James HARKNESS.  Her son James has James HARKNESS, Iron Fitter listed as his father on his marriage certificate to Eleanor BAINBRIDGE on 02 May 1864.  This probably means that both James and Sarah are in fact HARKNESS's, not LANGLEYs and that Moses LANGLEY was the first born child of George LANGLEY, not the third.

So... who was George LANGLEY?

The nearest 'candidate' I've found so far (even though the dates don't completely match up) is George LANGLEY born in Warkworth in Northumberland in 1799.  So I'm 'adopting' him until I find other information to prove differently.

The SIMPSON and GOMERSAL Families

The SIMPSON Family

Working on the basis that James LANGLEY took his mother's maiden name when he became James SIMPSON, I started looking for an Ann SIMPSON born in Washington in c1811.

25 Dec 1811 Ann SIMPSON, 6th daughter of Grainger SIMPSON, pitman, son of James SIMPSON of Bishop Auckland by his wife Mary daughter of John HOY of Tanfield. (b 18 Nov 1811) (Transcript of Washington Registers, (Newcastle Local Studies Centre 11 Dec 2003)

In the same volume I noted:

03 Sep 1809 Moses SIMPSON, 7th son of Grainger James SIMPSON of Bishop Auckland by his wife Mary HAY of Tanfield (b 26 Jul 1809)

In the IGI we also find

Jane SIMPSON b 16 Jun 1807 ch 20 Sep 1807 in Washington to Grainger James SIMPSON and Mary HOY

and again in the IGI for the Heworth area

John SIMPSON ch 25 Dec 1789

Mary SIMPSON b 05 Jan 1791 ch 06 Mar 1791

Humble SIMPSON b 20 Sep 1792 ch 28 Oct 1792

Charles SIMPSON ch 07 Sep 1794

Elizabeth SIMPSON b 20 Apr 1805 ch 14 Jul 1805

Grainger James SIMPSON married Mary HOY on 12 Jan 1789 at Heworth, Co. Durham.  This appears to have been his second marriage.  On 27 Jan 1782 he married Alice STEPHENSON at Chester le Street, Co. Durham.

Grainger James SIMPSON, son of James SIMPSON was christened on 27 Jul 1755 at Auckland St Andrew, Co. Durham.

James SIMPSON appears to have the following children, all christened at Auckland St Andrew (thanks to Sarah Hudspeth for confirming/adding to this information):

Charles SIMPSON ch 13 Feb 1741

Jane SIMPSON ch 04 Jul 1743

James SIMPSON ch 29 Sep 1745

James SIMPSON ch 18 Jun 1747

Anne SIMPSON ch 01 Jul 1750

John SIMPSON ch Jan 1753

Grainger James SIMPSON ch 27 Jul 1755

Mary SIMPSON ch 18 Dec 1757

Elizabeth SIMPSON ch 25 May 1760

THE GOMERSAL FAMILY

John GOMERSAL and his wife Jane Ann ROBINSON are at Eldon in the 1881 Census. John is 55 a Coal Miner and was born at Liversige, Yks (which I think is Liversedge near Wakefield). Jane Ann is 50 and comes from somewhere in Durham, possibly born in Jarrow. They are the only Gomersals in Durham in the 1881 Census. They are still in Eldon on the 1891 Census.

Thanks to Mary Gomersal, whose late husband was the grandson of John GOMERSAL's brother, William, I now know that John GOMERSAL was born in 1825 in the Dewsbury area, baptised on 7 Aug 1825 at Bradford, Yks and died in 1902 in Crook. He was one of eight children of William GOMERSAL and his wife Alice. Four of the brothers came north together some time after 1851 and settled in the Kelloe area although all but John had left to return back down to Yorkshire before 1881. The family were Quakers for many generations.

John married Jane Ann ROBINSON on 31 May 1851 at Monkwearmouth, Durham.  He is described as a widower and miner, resident at the Colliery.  His father, William GOMMERSAL, is described as a farmer.  Jane is described as a spinster, aged 20 and the daughter of Foster CHARLTON, miner.  Witnesses to the ceremony were Thomas HUNTER and Robert FERRY.

Jane Ann ROBINSON was the daughter of Sarah ROBINSON, born in Jarrow, Durham and baptised there on 5th Aug 1830.  Her father is unknown.  Her mother, Sarah married Foster CHARLTON on 8th Aug 1840 in Kelloe, Durham.  He is listed as Jane's father on her marriage certificate but whether this is in fact true, is not known at this time. In the 1871 census entry below, a Peter ROBINSON aged 40 from St Helens, Lancashire is lodging with the family.  It is not known at this time whether he is related to Jane or the surname is just a coincidence.
