So what did they do?  There's a family story that the Knowles came from money.  On this ‘evidence'... it might not originally have been theirs.

UPDATE: Well, thanks to some research on the Gale's Newspaper site I have discovered that Charles Knowles was not exactly a master criminal.  He was more of your get drunk, rob someone to get money to buy more alcohol career criminals.  To the extent of actually being so drunk in one robbery that he passed out at the scene and had to be woken up by the police so they could arrest him!

According to Roger Knowles, "family tradition says that Richard was sentenced to 21 years in prison for manslaughter but apparently wrongly, the perpertrator admitting his guilt many years afterwards, Richard was pardoned and awarded compensation, however his eyesight had deteriorated badly whilst in prison and he eventually set up as a money lender to the coal miners around Bell Lane in Bloxwich, where he lived his last years with his son Richard, my father had the job of carrying money to and from his grandfather as he became bedridden." Meanwhile, William Henry and his young family are in Hartlepool...

The WESTON Family

The WESTON family originated in the West Midlands. The link with my family is through Priscilla Weston who married William Henry Knowles. Their daughter, Harriett was my great-grandmother. She married James Harrison. Their daughter, Ada was my grandmother and her picture is on my Home Page.

Priscilla Weston born on the 6 May 1844 in  Birmingham, Warwickshire and christened 14 April 1846 at St Martins Church, Birmingham Warwickshire.  She was the eldest daughter of William Weston and Mary MOTTERAM. William and Mary had married in the same church on 17 April 1845. William is described as of full age, batchelor, labourer or Bristol Street, son of Richard WESTON, blacksmith. Mary is described as of full age, spinster of Bristol Street, daughter of William MOTTERAM, tin plate maker. Both made their mark and the marriage was witnessed by Ann GLOVER and M C DAVIS. (Thanks to Tina Brown-Love for this information).

William and Mary also had a daughter called Hannah, born on 26 Oct 1846 and christened on 9 November 1846 at St Martins Church, Birmingham, Warwickshire.

On the 1851 Census they are at 3 Twentymans Buildings in Birmingham

WESTON William Hd Mar 39 Carter b Wellington, Shropshire

WESTON Mary 37 Wf Mar 37 Launderess b Birmingham

WESTON Priscilla Dau 6 b Birmingham

WESTON Hannah Dau 4 b Birmingham

MOTTERAM John Nephew 5 b Oakengate, Shropshire

No further information yet on William WESTON son of Richard WESTON.

Priscilla WESTON married William Henry KNOWLES at Stockton, Durham in the March Quarter of 1872 (awaiting certificate)

The MOTTERAM Family

Mary Motteram was the daughter of William MOTTERAM and Priscilla CARTWRIGHT who were married at the church of St Peter and St Paul at Aston in Birmingham on 27 Jul 1819. No further info yet on William MOTTERAM but Priscilla CARTWRIGHT was born in 1786 in Brierly Hill Staffordshire (baptised 5 Feb 1786), the daughter of Joseph CARTWRIGHT and Ann.
