The HILL Family

THE HILL FAMILY

I have just begun researching my link to the HILL family of Sunderland and Bishopwearmouth. Edward Dobson CARR (my gt gt grandfather) married Catherine Sarah HILL on October 25th 1859 at St Thomas's Church Bishopwearmouth. Catherine was the daughter of Christopher HILL, Master Mariner and was 18 years old at the time of her marriage, living at 17 Howick Street. Edward was living at 19 High Street Bishopwearmouth at the time of his marriage and was working as a Draper. The marriage was witnessed by William John MATTISON and Mary Atkinson KYLE.

Catherine unfortunately died aged 30 in Hartlepool on 4th August 1871 of phthisis at the family home of 5 Hart Street, Hartlepool.  She is buried in the HILL family grave at Spion Kop in Hartlepool alongside her parents.

My information about the HILL family comes from Eleanor Clouter, also a descendant of Christopher HILL by his second wife Jane Hannah SAWKELL.

Catherine's parents were Christopher HILL and Christiana Aby USHER.  They married in Hartlepool on Feb 26 1839 and their daughter Catherine Sarah HILL was born in Hartlepool in 1841 and baptised at St Hilda's Church on 28 July 1841.

Christopher HILL was born in North Shields in 1814 and in a full life was initially a master mariner and then a pawnbroker and outfitter at 56 Northgate Street, Hartlepool, probably working alongside his son in law Edward Dobson Carr.

His parents were Joseph HILL

Joseph HILL was the son of John HILL and Anne MATWIN who married on 26 Feb 1771.  He was baptised in North Shields on 3 Jul 1785 and had several siblings - Thomas (b 1776) Henry (b 1778) Ann (b 1780), Jane (b 1782), Barbara (b 1789) and Patience (b 1792)

Christiana Abby USHER was the daughter of John USHER and Catherine ABBEY and was christened on the 24 November 1816 at Christchurch, Tynemouth in Northumberland.  She was the youngest of their children and had three sisters, Catharine, Annabell and Jane.  Her parents, John USHER and Catherine ABBY were married on 05 May 1794, also at Christ Church, Tynemouth
